History of the Inn
130 years ago Queensberry Inn was a midway coach and wagon stop for coaches and supply wagons travelling to and from the goldfields towns around Cromwell and Wanaka. At times up to eight wagons and 100 horses stopped there.
Passengers arrived by the twice-weekly coach from Dunedin to Pembroke (Wanaka). Many of the wagons were pulled by eight-horse teams which transported supplies from the railhead at Lawrence to Wanaka, a week-long trip. The Inn prospered until the mid 1920s when it fell on hard times and in 1930 the Inn licence was not renewed.
The Belshams bought the property in 1993. Bev Belsham, your host, lives in what remains of the former Inn. The stone tack room, groom's quarters and stable have been restored and converted into charming accommodation.
The buildings are now protected by a Heritage Covenant under the provisions of the Historic Places Trust Act 1993.
